Glad to hear it. I'm doing just about as well as I can be.

You mean the body that was just found? I saw. Even with everything we're doing to make sure people are safe, some are still falling through the cracks.
Good. I haven't seen you in a while, was getting worried.
FROM: parker.peter@cdc.org
And yeah. Part of me wonders how the heck that's even possible all things considered. These guys are capable of so many things but they can't catch or identify a killer on their own ship?
I think I'll be worried about everyone until we catch the thing that's doing this.
FROM: bott.marco@cdc.org
No one can do everything. They're capable of all kinds of incredible things but some things have to be out of their control. [Are you barking up a conspiracy tree, Peter? Because you happen to be talking to the guy who has absolute faith in the integrity of a king who doesn't amount to much more than an unwashed drooling vegetable.]
You think this could've been planned by whoever was attacking Selena?
FROM: bott.marco@cdc.org
I doubt anyone would be totally fine after something like that. Jean might be as spooked as anyone else around here, but he's tough too. He can focus on what needs to be done when it counts.
[What he doesn't say is that it's not the first corpse Jean has seen. Death isn't something that becomes any easier to stomach the more you see it, but they're soldiers, and it's a reality they must live with.]
Could be. I can't imagine there's a lot of places too happy about the existence of a planet destroying company.
FROM: parker.peter@cdc.org
I think I already maxed out my nagging quota for Jean a couple days ago. I found him after his black box training and nobody's happy after a round of that it seems.
It's true they must make enemies pretty easily. People want to make sure their homeland isn't next on the queue. But it seems unfair to target the low-ranking soldiers who have no choice but to carry

He didn't tell me he was doing the training. From what I've heard it's pretty brutal.
Terrorism never bothers to look for justified kills. The point is to send a message, and sometimes the more innocent the target, the better.

Besides we're the grunts carrying out the CDC's orders. We're gonna be the ones going to people's planets and demolishing everything they've ever had. We're going to deserve it.
FROM: parker.peter@cdc.org
Yeah i haven't seen anyone come out of that with an ounce of sunshine left in them. I know it's set to target the weak points but from the sound of it it goes above and beyond the call of duty there.
[We're going to deserve it. He pauses over this grim admonition. Lets it sit in his stomach like a brick as he grips his Blackglass tighter.]

We really are going to be the same as monsters to so many people, aren't we. We're destroying entire worlds for no reason except that we were told to, if we want to protect our own homes. There's no sense in any of it.
FROM: bott.marco@cdc.org
I can understand them wanting us to get stronger, but I don't think eliminating all weakness is the way to do that.
You don't have to understand it. You just have to anticipate it. There's a lot of sick people in the world, and there's a lot of rightly embittered ones too.
FROM: parker.peter@cdc.org
We're now in a position where we and anyone around us is going to be a target. And it blows because we don't even have a solid reason yet for why the CDC wants us to do this but we're not having much of a choice with that either.
FROM: parker.peter@cdc.org
Yeah. I'm kind of worried about what they're going to try to deem a "weakness." We're exempt for now but I'm a little worried about the guys that have to go through it.
I don't like feeling so helpless to it. But there really isn't any other way. I'd rather focus on the small differences I can make for people back home.
FROM: bott.marco@cdc.org
I can't help but worry too. It seems harsh, but I'm sure there's purpose to it.
FROM: bott.marco@cdc.org
Still, I think there can be strength even in weakness. It's human to be weak, we're not tools or machines. Before anything else, a soldier should be human.
I pledged to give my heart to humanity. I'm not taking that back. I just never expected it would come at the cost of anyone but myself.
FROM: bott.marco@cdc.org
Are they really that different from us?
FROM: bott.marco@cdc.org
I didn't know that. I thought these messages were private. Thank you, Peter. There's just a lot that's hard to make sense of right now. It's hard to know where to stand in all of this.

I suppose that's all we can do. I've got family to think of, and a lot of friends. It's just...hard to justify all the same.
