You think this could've been planned by whoever was attacking Selena?

I doubt anyone would be totally fine after something like that. Jean might be as spooked as anyone else around here, but he's tough too. He can focus on what needs to be done when it counts.

[What he doesn't say is that it's not the first corpse Jean has seen. Death isn't something that becomes any easier to stomach the more you see it, but they're soldiers, and it's a reality they must live with.]

If you're worried though you could ask him.

It's true they must make enemies pretty easily. People want to make sure their homeland isn't next on the queue. But it seems unfair to target the low-ranking soldiers who have no choice but to carry

out the CDC's orders.

He didn't tell me he was doing the training. From what I've heard it's pretty brutal.

I can't understand that sort of thinking.

[We're going to deserve it. He pauses over this grim admonition. Lets it sit in his stomach like a brick as he grips his Blackglass tighter.]

We really are going to be the same as monsters to so many people, aren't we. We're destroying entire worlds for no reason except that we were told to, if we want to protect our own homes. There's no sense in any of it.

FROM: bott.marco@cdc.org

I can understand them wanting us to get stronger, but I don't think eliminating all weakness is the way to do that.

I don't like feeling so helpless to it. But there really isn't any other way. I'd rather focus on the small differences I can make for people back home.

FROM: bott.marco@cdc.org

I can't help but worry too. It seems harsh, but I'm sure there's purpose to it.

FROM: bott.marco@cdc.org

Still, I think there can be strength even in weakness. It's human to be weak, we're not tools or machines. Before anything else, a soldier should be human.

I pledged to give my heart to humanity. I'm not taking that back. I just never expected it would come at the cost of anyone but myself.

Are they really that different from us?

FROM: bott.marco@cdc.org

I didn't know that. I thought these messages were private. Thank you, Peter. There's just a lot that's hard to make sense of right now. It's hard to know where to stand in all of this.
